For those who came late, Aruna was raped 37 years ago and is in vegetative state since then. She was a nurse in KEM hospital and was raped by ward boy of that hospital. Now these were the words. Imagine someone after sufferung from all this trauma has to remain in state of semicoma that too for long '37 years'.
Aruna's friend, who also wrote a book on her appealed for euthanasia. But SC rejected it!!
Most of the people are not in favour of the verdict saying that as every person has 'right to live', they should also have 'right to end there life'. Which if we think is rational to some extent. But people are not looking at bigger picture. Let us take an liberty and try to think from SC's point of view.
When they have to give a verdict of this nature, they know all eyes are on them and whatever they decide will effect the society as a whole. There's never an individual plea case in democracy. The verdict will become law according to Indian Constitution. Which means that there will be more cases or pleas we shall say for euthanasia, some of them might be true to there nature but this law can be easily used against someone.
With gowing crime rate in our country, we are just giving criminals one more way to 'legally kill' someone. Through corruption, prove someone in vegetative state and kill them in the name euthanasia. We know our system is not strong enough to check each and every case like it did in this case. First our system has to get more strong and we need to behave more maturely as a society. Aruna's case is genuine, in my point of view she should be allowed to kill herself but the question arises when more such cases will come, will government and SC will take extra efforts again and check the each case as they did this time? We all know they will not. And as a matter of fact they know it well too. So they blankly didnt allow it and closed the hope of all other likes of Aruna Shanbaug who were heavily banking on the verdict. They know, as Aruna was not allowed, they will not also. SC and government removed the burden of future cases and took the easy road instead.
